Understanding the Influence—Information and Strategies for Youth Substance Abuse Prevention

In collaboration with Alere and First Check, notMYkid presents Understanding the Influence: Information and Strategies for Youth Substance Abuse Prevention.

This webinar is designed to equip parents, legal guardians, school faculty members, and youth mentors with knowledge on drugs of abuse, youth risk factors pertaining to substance abuse, the effects of drugs and alcohol on the developing brain of adolescents, prevention strategies, and how adults can effectively intervene if they perceive a problem. Viewers will also learn how to have open and honest dialogue with youth in order to prevent and address destructive behaviors.



Shane Watson is a Prevention Specialist for notMYkid, a not for profit organization that inspires positive life choices. He has been with the organization for over four years. Shane presents on: bullying, substance abuse, internet safety, and depression/suicide/selfinjury.

He joined notMYkid in January of 2013 as a student Peer Educator with the goal of sharing his personal story of addiction and recovery in order to prevent students from going down a similar path. Now more than five years clean and sober, he remains driven by the desire to equip students, parents, school faculty, and other community members with the knowledge and courage necessary to prevent negative youth behaviors and inspire positive life choices. Shane is a graduate of Grand Canyon University (1999) with a B.A. in Journalism.

FirstCheck was invited to film a segment on Good Day New York featuring our prevention specialist, Shane Watson, and our HIDE (Help Increase Drug Education) Teen Room. This room was developed to help educate parents about teen drug use, concealment devices that could be used in their child’s room, what to look for, and how FirstCheck Home Drug Tests can be utilized.
